The JEP in the pandemic: Episode 3 of the CAPAZ web-video column with Juliette Vargas
Episode three of the CAPAZ “La paz, ahora más que nunca” (Peace, now more than ever), deals with the Special Jurisdiction for Peace (JEP), with special guest Juliette Vargas, CAPAZ and CEDPAL Science collaborator and PhD student at the University of Göttingen in Germany.
In the third episode entitled: “La JEP ante la pandemia – Dilemas del tribunal de paz en Colombia” (The JEP in the face of the pandemic – Dilemmas of the Peace Tribunal in Colombia) (in Spanish), Juliette Vargas takes a close look at the work of the JEP during the current COVID-19 crisis. She describes the challenges faced by the JEP in terms of health measures taken to mitigate the pandemic. The peace tribunal and the other components of the Comprehensive System of Transitional Justice in Colombia are experiencing difficulties in exercising their mandate, especially in remote locations away from urban and rural centres.
The victims, who are the raison d’être of the system, feel that their participation and collaboration with these institutions is threatened, not only because of the lack of access to digital technologies but also because of the security situation in the territories, given that some of them are also social leaders.
