María Linares is a Colombian artist who studied Fine Arts and Philosophy in Bogotá. She arrived in Germany in 1996 and since then has developed a great interest in the relationship between public space, art, and social criticism. It is precisely thinking about the public that has led her to create works such as the one she is currently working on in Colombia: an initiative to rename Día de la Raza (Columbus Day) celebrated on October 12.
The project that began in 2015 consists of a large database from which Maria invited her contacts to propose alternative names for the celebration. The artist understands the public not only in terms of physical spaces, but also in terms of the things we celebrate ‘in common’ as a society. “The public is also the collective”, Maria explains, and she considers the term ‘race’ to be problematic.
Nodo Alemania is the Colombian Truth Commission’s support group in Germany, and it is supported by CAPAZ, through its activities, events, and communication resources. There are approximately fourteen nodes in Europe promoting the mandate of the Truth Commission.
