“Inequality Kills: The COVID-19 Pandemic in Latin America”: Stefan Peters for Revista Semana

In the online issue of Revista Semana, Professor of Peace Studies at Justus Liebig University Giessen and CAPAZ Academic Director, Prof. Dr. Stefan Peters reflects on the impacts that COVID-19 will have on the most vulnerable population. He proposes three concrete ways out of the current crisis.
“The world is under the shadow of COVID-19. Public life has come to a standstill and curfews are in place in an increasing number of countries. These measures are correct and essential in order to contain the new virus and protect lives. Nevertheless, these actions are not consistent with the living conditions of the majority of the world’s population. Moreover, in the countries of the Global South, most of the victims will not be direct casualties of the virus, but rather indirect victims owing to the economic and social consequences of the virus. But this is not inevitable. To cushion the social impacts, we need national and international political action to protect vulnerable populations. At present this is as unlikely as it is vital”.
