II International Symposium “Memory and Peacebuilding in Colombia”
The second international symposium “Memory and Peacebuilding in Colombia” will be held at Goethe-Universität Frankfurt (Germany) on November 27-29, 2019. The CAPAZ Institute Academic Director, Prof. Dr. Stefan Peters, will discuss the issue of social inequality in Colombia with the Colombian expert Alejandro Reyes Posada.
The second symposium continues the reflection on peacebuilding and memory reconstruction processes begun in 2017 when the first version of the event was held. On this occasion, the symposium will focus on analysing the consequences of violence for Colombian society, its social fabric and collective imaginary, and forms of reparation through social and cultural initiatives and memory reconstruction initiatives created by the civilian population supported by various national and international organisations and institutions.
Given that Colombia currently has to deal with new forms of violence that have emerged following the signing of the peace agreements with the FARC in 2016, this second symposium is conceived as a space for dialogue between representatives of Colombian society and different German institutions, providing opportunities for academic exchange and strengthening Colombian democracy.
The implementation of the agreements has itself been a fragile process that reflects the existing socio-political polarisation in the country, as a result of a society traumatised by decades of violence and crisis in the development of forms of collective mourning, truth and reconciliation. The long process of transition towards peace in Colombia requires the participation of different actors with different experiences, memories, expectations, and needs.
