CAPAZ Talks: Literature, Violence and Memory

As part of the academic agenda of the CAPAZ Spotlight on Peace series, during the first semester of 2019, the German-Colombian Peace Institute – CAPAZ, in partnership with the Cultural Heritage Directorate at Universidad Nacional de Colombia, is pleased to invite you to the discussion on literature, violence and memory, which will be held on Wednesday, June 5, 2019, at 5:00 p.m. at Claustro de San Agustín in Bogotá (Cra. 8 No. 7-21). Admission is free of charge.

Much of Colombia’s literature in recent decades reflects and elaborates on the violent events that have taken place in the country. Reflecting on German history, author Heiner Müller asserted that literature must maintain a dialogue with the dead in order to overcome the society’s historical trauma. Without this recovery – according to Müller – there could be no future.

What is the link between action and literary reflection, violence and the construction of memory? Does literature make any contribution to the construction of historical memory, in the case of Colombia specifically, a country in 50 years of armed conflict?

In this conversation, Reinhard Babel (director of the DAAD in Colombia and professor of literary studies at Universidad Nacional de Colombia) will talk with writer Laura Restrepo and writer Evelio Rosero about their motivations to dedicate their work to the topic of violence and the contribution of literature to the construction of memory in Colombia.

See you in the Claustro San Agustín for the CAPAZ Spotlight on Peace series!
